Mel Brooks Releasing Tell-All ‘Young Frankenstein’ Book

Fresh on the heels of the Radio City/Blazing Saddles news, director Mel Brooks and publisher Black Dog & Leventhal have announced that, coming this October, Brooks will be publishing a tell-all book about the making of his horror/comedy classic, Young Frankenstein.

Young Frankenstein: A Mel Brooks Book will take readers behind the scenes of the film that Brooks considers his greatest project as a writer/director. The book, featuring a forward by director Judd Apatow, will give all of the intimate details that a fan could ever want to know about the classic film, from on-set antics to inside jokes between the actors, all in Brooks’ own words. It will also include contemporary interviews with cast and crew members such as actress Cloris Leachman, director of photography Gerald Hirschfield, producer Michael Gruskoff, and of course, Brooks himself. All of this will be supplemented by 225 never-before-seen photographs, both black and white and in color, that document the day-to-day operations of the cast and crew on set.

Brooks wrote an introduction for the book that sums up the magic behind Young Frankenstein perfectly: “Of all of my films, I am the proudest of this one. My hope was that Young Frankenstein would transport audiences the way I was transported as a kid sitting in the dark in Williamsburg watching James Whale’s Frankenstein. I think we succeeded, and in this book I will show you how we did it.”

J.P. Leventhal, the publisher behind the project, had this to say: “It is a complete pleasure and privilege to work with Mel and his team on this book. I can’t remember any book that has been so much fun to make, with lots of hearty and silly belly laughs. Mel’s many fans will enjoy this behind-the-scenes story and his personal insights into the making of Young Frankenstein.”

Young Frankenstein: A Mel Brooks Book will be published on October 18th, 2016, acting as a precursor to the opening of Young Frankenstein: The Musical in London’s West End in 2017.
