Madonna Joins an All Star Line Up at the Comedy Cellar in NYC

If you follow a lot of NY comedians on Instagram, last night you might have thought your app was broken or maybe there was a glitch in the Matrix because it seemed like every single comedian had the same photo up on their Instagram at once. Comedy royalty Amy Schumer was on stage with the Material Girl herself- Madonna- on a random Tuesday night. And that seemed to be the photo grab everyone wanted, even though the entire line up was packed with comedy giants. Also on the line up was Pete Holmes, Aziz Ansari, Jon Stewart and Louis C.K.- not bad for a $12 show on a weeknight. Sean Donnelly hosted and described the experience as “bat shit.” Joe List was also scheduled to perform, but got bumped for well- pretty much all of those people. He wrote on his Instagram “Still think I should have probably closed it out but what when can you do. (Yes that is Madonna).” We saw List earlier in the night at Gotham’s Comedy Juice and he is scary funny. But that has nothing to do with the Cellar Lineup.

Schumer- who was also at the Cellar on Monday night working on material for a new hour- posted a pic on her Instagram, captioned “We’d like to thank @nyccomedycellar for taking a chance on our new act.” Madonna thanked Schumer and the Cellar for helping her finally bust her cherry calling the experience a thrill. Maddy may have busted her comedy club cherry last night, but its not actually her first time attempting comedy in front of an audience. Back in April 2015, she told Jimmy Fallon that her long time dream was to perform stand up comedy and he gave her the stage to do a little short set- and Madonna was probably the first person to ever make their stand up comedy debut on The Tonight Show, and was definitely the first comedian to perform pantsless on The Tonight Show.

New York comics have become used to having comedy A-listers drop in at the Cellar, and even when they come in a pack, it doesn’t necessarily turn heads anymore. It would be hard to top January’s mega-star line up that included Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari, and Dave Chappelle.

But there’s something about having the one time Queen of Pop stop in that got everyone’s attention.
