Losing Team Guaranteed To Make NFL Playoffs

nflThe NFL Playoffs field is made up of the four division winners plus the next two teams with the best records in each conference. Which means whoever has the best overall record in the NFC South gets an automatic berth. So in Week 17, the Atlanta Falcons (6-9-0) will host the Carolina Panthers (6-8-1) in a de facto division title game. Neither team will win more games than they’ve lost, and the Panthers could advance with a tie, meaning a 6-8-2 team would, by NFL rule, host a playoff game the next week. Meanwhile, the 9-6-0 Eagles are already eliminated, and even the AFC’s Bills and Dolphins (both 8-7-0 and out) have got to feel depressed just thinking about it.

It’s the only berth that’s up for grabs in the last week, as Green Bay and Detroit will basically be fighting to see who gets the division or the wild card.
