As another piece of Tonight Show history begins tonight, here’s some of the big moments in a show that’s been a television institution for 60 years.

1954: Steve Allen begins the first Tonight Show in 1954 explaining to the audience what “Tonight” is, or more importantly what it isn’t.

1960:  Jack Parr giving up The Tonight Show for the first time.

1962:  Groucho Marx introducing a nervous Johnny Carson as the new permanent host of The Tonight Show.

1992:  Johnny Carson retires from the Tonight Show after 30 years. Here’s his last guest, Bette Midler serenading Johnny “good-bye”.

1992:  Jay Leno takes over The Tonight Show for the first time, with his first guest Billy Crystal.

2010:  Conan O’Brien says goodbye after 7 months as the host of The Tonight Show.

2014:  Jay Leno’s emotional second good-bye from The Tonight Show.

2014:  The Tonight Show. The tradition continues.
