Lawsuit Alleges Jim Carrey Aided in Ex-Girlfriend’s Suicide, Covered Up Involvement

Around this time last year, actor Jim Carrey and then-girlfriend Cathriona White broke up. A little over a week later, after falling out of contact with her friends and family for a few days, White was discovered in her apartment, dead from an overdose of prescription drugs. Although no longer together, Carrey’s grief was apparent. He spoke of White’s death publicly and was a pallbearer at her funeral in her native Ireland. Now, with the one-year anniversary of that terrible day fast-approaching, a dark cloud is being cast over Carrey once again, this time in the form of a lawsuit from White’s estranged husband.

According to the IB Times, Mark Burton, whom White was married to from 2013 up until her death, has filed a wrongful death suit against Carrey, alleging that the Dumb and Dumber star was the one who provided White with the lethal mixture of prescription medications that she ultimately used to kill herself. Carrey, Burton claims, acquired the pills under the pseudonym “Arthur King” and gave them to White, knowing full-well that White was in a dangerous mental state and not capable of managing those medications without strict instructions from her doctor. White had a history of depression, and had attempted to take her own life in the past.

Carrey, on the other hand, claims that White stole the drugs from him and that he was unaware of her condition at the time. Burton calls that claim into question, saying that if Carrey had known that White had stolen the drugs and then subsequently gone missing for days on end, then he was criminally negligent by not contacting the police to check on her.

White was eventually found dead in her apartment on September 28th by four of her friends, and toxicologists confirmed that she had oxycodone, oxymorphone, propranolol and zolpidem in her system.

The entire situation is a muddied, ugly mess. Regardless of the outcome, there is no happy ending; Either Carrey knowingly gave the drugs to White (or they were stolen and he did nothing to warn anyone of the writing on the wall), or Burton is lodging the suit simply as a money-grab.

For his part, Carrey responded to the lawsuit with as much indignation as one might expect. “What a terrible shame,” he said in a statement to USA TODAY. “It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world.”

The full details of the lawsuit can be found here. The suit was only filed on Monday night, so there have yet to be any developments in the case so far. Check back with the IBang for more information as it comes out.
