Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of May 21, 2018

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

If there’s one show on the late night schedule this week that everyone is talking about it’s Wednesday’s edition of Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC. This episode marks the return of the Late Night‘s creator and original host David Letterman. We covered the news of Dave returning to Late Night when it first announced by the series’ executive producer Mike Shoemaker. Letterman became an innovator in late night, changing the format much the same way his hero Johnny Carson rewrote the rules when he inherited the Tonight Show in 1962. Everyone currently with a hosting gig in late night television is doing a variation of what Letterman created when “Late Night” first signed on the air on February 1, 1982. The show’s current host, Seth Meyers, has always attributed Late Night‘s continued success to the foundation that David Letterman first laid in those early days of the variety series. It will be interesting to see how Letterman sees the current late night comedy landscape in the Trump era. When Letterman retired in 2015, the idea of Donald Trump as President was still just a punchline used in dystopian comedy. On Wednesday, he sits down to compare notes with Seth Meyers, a host in the thick of the Trump years and who dedicates his entire opening segments to the President on a nightly basis.

Another highlight to look forward to this week, are the “Best Of” compilations from the Daily Show with Trevor Noah on Comedy Central. If you need a refresher course on the Trevor Noah edition of the Daily Show and his current news team, this is the week for you. Each night this week is dedicated to a different Daily Show correspondent. It all begins on Monday with “The Best of Desi Lydic Vol. 2“, followed by “The Best of Ronny Chieng Vol. 2” on Tuesday, then Wednesday is “The Best of Dulce Sloan” and finally, it’s “The Best of Michael Kosta” on Thursday.

Looking at other highlights this week, comedy icon Carol Burnett returns to Conan on Monday to talk about becoming first ever recipient of the Peabody Career Achievement Award and her new Netflix series, “A Little Help with Carol Burnett“. On her new series, Carol Burnett hosts a panel of kids who are there to give advice to adults including celebrity guests and everyday people who are there to discuss their problems and seek the wisdom of a group of 5 to 9 year olds. “A Little Help with Carol Burnett – Season 1” is currently streaming all 12 episodes on Netflix. On Tuesday, there’s a brand new episode of The Jim Jefferies Show happening on Comedy Central. And then, the only show in late night with enough guts and craziest enough to go live, The Chris Gethard Show is back with a new show with Chris’ guest Michael Beasley from the New York Knicks and with music from New York City’s own Bush Tetras.

Thursday, Stephen Colbert welcomes the best humorist and comedy essayist of his generation, David Sedaris, to the Late Show on CBS. Plus, Colbert will also have new stand up that night from Ahmed Bharoocha whose comedy album, “Almond Badoody,” is available from Comedy Central Records. Ahmed’s “Half Hour” special is also available on CC. Also on Thursday, we will finally answer the question that has been plaguing comedy fans for a year now, who is taller? Conan O’Brien or former FBI Director James Comey!? The fired G-man and tallest director in the bureau’s history will be visiting the tallest host currently in late night. And if hearing bad stuff about Trump wasn’t fun enough on Thursday night, Team Coco also gets a visit from the very funny Tig Notaro, who has been cast to play the First Lady and wife to the President of the United States who will be played by Jennifer Aniston in the upcoming Netflix comedy film, “First Ladies.” When the news about this Netflix comedy movie was announced, it was Fortune Feimster who put it perfectly on Twitter when she said, “Every lesbian in Hollywood is now wishing they had thought of pitching a movie where they play Jennifer Aniston’s wife.”
