Larry Wilmore: White House Correspondent’s Dinner “Could Explode from the Narcissism Alone”

In an interview with CNN’s John Berman today, The Nightly Show’s Larry Wilmore said that the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, taking place this Saturday, is “the most narcissistic room ever invented: journalists, politicians, and Hollywood. And the president.”

Wilmore landed the prestigious hosting gig back in December, an opportunity that he was really happy to have. “I really did want to do it for this president, and I thought the time might have expired for that, so to sneak in there at the end is very cool.” The comedian, while perhaps a new-ish face to many, has a long and decorated career in comedy, writing for shows such as In Living Color, The Facts of Life, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The Bernie Mac Show, for which he won an Emmy.

Wilmore openly admitted in the interview that he voted for Obama for “his policy of being black,” and that his show tends to skew left (obviously.) When asked if he’d take it easy on Obama, however, Wilmore said that “I’ve got to keep it 100, come on man. I mean, this is the last dinner, what are they going to do, send the IRS after me?” Wilmore has actually been critical of Obama in the past, so it seems the comic is going to relish the opportunity to have free reign to poke fun at and call out the president and the other political power players that will be present.

The interview also featured a word association game, featuring the five remaining presidential candidates. For Bernie Sanders, Wilmore said “Scrappy,” for Ted Cruz, “Creepy,” and for Trump, “Unbelievable, in every way.”
