The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore is less than a month old and his having a huge growing pain. Jon Stewart, the host of its highly successful lead in, the Daily Show, is leaving. Wilmore told the Hollywood Reporter at the WGA Awards, “I was devastated just like everyone else just because of the thought of Jon leaving, but talking to him about it and everything, it feels like it’s time for him to move on.” Jon Stewart is also an executive producer on the Nightly Show.

Wilmore says he and his staff found out about Jon Stewart leaving the Daily Show about a week before Stewart went public. Wilmore talked about how he reacted when Stewart told him, “I slapped him. Shook him a little bit.”

The creator of the original Daily Show, Lizz Winstead also talked about the Stewart situation at the WGAs. She discussed Comedy Central trying to find a replacement for Stewart. She said, “Jon not only took time to develop himself and his role, he took time to develop a franchise where it felt like a super solid foundation for the next person to come in. We’ve seen John Oliver be able to do it. There’s somebody that will come in that will be able to do it because that’s the legacy that Jon left for that person, that’s pretty awesome.”

On who she would like to see as the next host of the Daily Show, Winstead had a couple of female options that she said “would be fun choices”, Aisha Tyler or Rachel Maddow.
