Kevin Smith Suffers Massive Heart Attack While Taping Comedy Special
Actor, directors, screenwriter, podcaster and comedian Kevin Smith is in the hospital recovering from a massive heart attack. Smith announced the news with a tweet and a selfie from his hospital bed at 3am.
Smith suffered from a 100% blockage of his LAD artery. The attack happened shortly after a 6pm performance at the Alex Theater in Glendale. Smith was shooting a new stand up special with Comedy Dynamics and was getting ready to perform a second show when he decided to head to the hospital. Smith said that if he hadn’t cancelled his second show to go to the hospital, he would have died. “But for now, I’m still above ground!” he wrote. The LAD artery is the main artery supplying blood to the heart, and is also known as the widow maker because a blockage of that artery is often fatal.
On his Instagram, Smith wrote that he might have gone too far trying to do a “killer” stand up special. After the first show ended, he said he felt nauseous, threw up, and started sweating with a heavy feeling in his chest. “Turns out I had a massive heart attack,” Smith wrote on Instagram. Smith shared with his fans some deep thoughts about his near death experience about his fear of death, and his dad who died from a massive heart attack. “Death was always the thing I was most terrified of in life,” he said. “When the time came, I never imagined I’d ever be able to die with dignity – I assumed I’d die screaming, like my Dad (who lost his life to a massive heart attack). But even as they cut into my groin to slip a stent into the lethal Widow-Maker, I was filled with a sense of calm.” He said that as he “stared into the infinite” he felt content. “Yes, I’d miss life as it moved on without me – and I was bummed we weren’t gonna get to make #jayandsilentbobreboot before I shuffled loose the mortal coil. But generally speaking, I was okay with the end, if this was gonna be it.”
Smith added that he has had a great life, a weird wonderful career, amazing friends, the best wife in the world and an incredible daughter, and spoke of having many cool experiences. “Total strangers saved my life tonight (as well as my friends @jordanmonsanto & @iamemilydawn, who called the ambulance),” he wrote and referred to plans to make some lifestyle changes.
“I don’t want my life to end but if it ends, I can’t complain. It was such a gift. #KevinSmith”
After the first show this evening, I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka “the Widow-Maker”). If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground! pic.twitter.com/M5gSnW9E5h
