Kevin Hart Holding Short Film Contest at Just For Laughs This Year

At last year’s Just For Laughs festival in Montreal, comedian teamed up with festival organizers to throw the Laugh Out Loud Network Pitch Panel, an event where content creators could pitch their original comedy pilots and ideas to Hart in the hopes of being picked up by Hart’s new streaming comedy network, Laugh Out Loud. Well, Hart and his team have announced that they are coming back to JFL and their JFL ComedyPRO conference again this year to continue their search for the best undiscovered voices in comedy.

Whereas last year, Hart and company were looking for folks with comedy pilots to show, this year they’re on the lookout specifically for hilarious short films. Interested parties have until May 13th to submit their films, which must meet a set of guidelines before being entered. Representatives from both JFL and LOL will check out the submitted films, from which 20 shorts will selected to stream on the LOL network’s app and website when they launch sometime this summer. From there, fans will vote on their favorite films, and five lucky entrants will then have their projects screened at JFL on July 27th, after which Hart himself will announce which film has come out on top. The individual or team behind the winning entry will receive a development deal with LOL to create a new short to be streamed on the LOL network.

A full set of guidelines for entry can be found here, but the basic rules are that all submitted films must be between three and 22 minutes long, and must speak to a multi-cultural, millennial-centric audience. Films can be in any language, but must at least contain English subtitles.

“I want to create a stage for the next generation of comedic storytellers,” said Hart of his new passion project. “I’m excited about partnering with Just for Laughs to find talented filmmakers and give them a platform on LOL.”

Just For Laughs ComedyPRO will be taking place from July 26th — July 29th at the Hyatt Regency Montreal; Just For Laughs will run from July 12th — 31st. More information about the festival can be found here.
