Kate McKinnon appears on as Ellen, on Ellen

Kate McKinnon brought her skill for spot on impressions front and center when she appeared on Ellen Wednesday. It is one thing to do an impression of someone who isn’t right next to you, but McKinnon has mastered the art of doing impressions of people standing right next to her. If you want to lovingly make fun of someone to their face Kate McKinnon is your girl. She pulled it off masterfully with Amy Poehler as they did the “Ghosts of HIllary Clinton” SNL sketch a few weeks back and yesterday was no difference. McKinnon appeared during Degeneres’ monologue, dressed exactly the same and told the talk show host “I got this, blondie. step aside.” Ellen did, and McKinnon set forth on a hilarious take on Ellen’s monologue, poking fun at the stand-up’s detailed story telling style and general excitability.

The talk show host had fun playing along, but did challenge McKinnon’s use of the phrase “kitty kitty kitty cats” saying that she ( real Ellen) does not use that phrase. McKinnon, the consummate professional, played a retrospective montage of herself, playing Ellen, reciting “kitty kitty kitty cats” all over the Ellen set. Of course no Ellen opening would be complete without some dancing, and the audience was treated to double the Ellen and double the dancing. McKinnon changed into a dress ( the antithesis of an Ellen outfit) and settled into the couch for a fun interview.

The two discussed Kate’s impressions, explaining that they “come out of absolute love” for whomever she is impersonating. She also chatted about the new all female cast Ghostbusters movie, due out this summer. Paul Feig will direct the script he co-wrote with Katie Dippold, based on the original Ghostbusters concept. McKinnon will be joined on screen by castmate Leslie Jones, funny woman Melissa McCarthy and fellow SNL alum Kristen Wiig. The movie is set to premiere July 15th in the US.
