Kal Penn Tweet Leads To Nearly Half a Million Raised for Refugees
In what could serve as an ideal model for the future of our strange, disintegrating world, an ugly tweet set off Kal Penn to start a now incredibly successful online fundraiser for refugees. Presumably emboldened by Trump’s controversial executive order banning travel between the States and seven majority-Muslim countries, an anonymous Twitter troll tweeted at Kal Penn nothing really worth repeating, but that Penn doesn’t belong in America for ethnic reasons. In response, Penn started a fundraiser for Syrian refugees through the International Rescue Committee and the money just keeps rolling in. The initial goal of $100,000 was promptly decimated and a whole 24 hours in, $335,255 has been raised with a new goal of $400,000.
Kal Penn did his homework in setting up the fundraiser’s page. In addition to accepting donations, the page has an informative list of reliable news sources to follow on Twitter, organizations resisting the current administration that need your help with their Twitter handles and a link to an in-depth spread sheet of every U.S. senator and governor’s stance on the ban and their contact information. If this story doesn’t calm your nerves a little, it’s really soothing to watch donations as they’re received in real time. Ooh, some money just got donated by “Fuck ‘Em”. S/he sounds nice.
