Judd Apatow Warns About the Retweet Trap: Don’t Think You’ve Done Something Productive
In an interview with The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd, director/writer Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Freaks and Geeks) revealed that he hasn’t been feeling so hot since the election of Donald Trump. The vocally left-swinging Apatow has been stressed out since early November, as evidenced by his frequent political tweets/retweets and his recent penchant for Oreos.
“I’m trying so hard to have it not turn into 30 pounds,” he jokes about his stress-snacking. “I think it tests our ability to not want to numb out. There’s so many things that are hard to hear every day that you do want to have some Oreos. Like people say, what do you invest in during the Trump era? I feel like, Hostess Cakes. Most of us are just scared and eating ice cream.”
He’s admittedly felt a bit scared himself, which explains his increased activity on Twitter lately. His fear has driven him to try and be more active, more involved in the discussion of and movement against President-elect Trump, though he doesn’t delude himself that his words are doing much. “There’s a danger on the internet that you think you’re accomplishing something,” he warns. “So you see an article about a disease and retweet it and think ‘It’s cured now!’ And you’ve fooled yourself into thinking that you’ve done something productive.”
The director is well aware that despite his opinions, Trump will be sworn into office in just a few short days, and that the fight is no longer against just the man, but what he stands to represent. “I don’t think it serves a purpose,” says Apatow, “to be against him. It only serves a purpose to fight issue by issue.”
And that is exactly what Apatow intends to do, by transitioning “from making comments on social media to choosing one or two organizations to work with and support.”
Apatow also touches on Hillary Clinton’s campaign, The Apprentice, and a meeting with Trump as a young stand-up during the interview. To read the full article, head on over to the New York Times’ website.
