Jon Stewart Signs Deal with HBO

jon stewart last week announcement

First John Oliver, now Jon Stewart! HBO is stealing all of Comedy Central’s former smart and funny JohnJons.  According to Deadline, he’ll be making short-form digital content for HBO Now, HBO Go and other platforms.  They also get first-look at any TV and films that Stewart produces or creates in the future.

He’s already announced his first project, which will be to produce current events based digital content for HBO Now. Multiple pieces are planned each day and it appears that Stewart plans to appear in some of them.

“I’m so excited to be working with Richard, Michael and the entire HBO family,” Stewart said in a statement. “Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again.”

Stewart shocked the world when he suddenly announced last year that he was leaving The Daily Show after 17 years without announcing any new plans. It was widely rumored and speculated that he was leaving the show to resume his stand up career.  We first heard that when Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minaj shared the news with Jeffrey Gurian and Stewarts recent appearance at the New York Comedy Cellar seemed to further confirm that Stewart would turn his focus from the screen to the stage.  Hopefully Stewart will continue to enjoy both.

His last day on The Daily Show was August 1, 2015. He was succeeded by Daily Show correspondent Trevor Noah.
