Each year, mtvU the 24 hour college network side of MTV honors their choice for Man and Woman of the Year.

This is mtvU selected John Oliver as Man of the Year. Oliver was chosen for his groundbreaking new show “Last Week Tonight on HBO. He not only was able to take a comedic look at the deeper issues facing the planet today, but also get his audience involved and caring about today’s social problems.

Woman of the Year honors went to Kaci Hickox who was a volunteer nurse with Doctors Without Borders that helped fight the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and fought her mandatory quarantine order after returning to the United States.

Stephen Friedman, President of MTV said, “Kaci Hickox and John Oliver are two voices that stand as an example of strength for today’s college students. They’re each fighting for important issues and using reason as their weapon. Kaci is emblematic of so many young civil servants around the world committed to helping others while remaining true to themselves. mtvU is proud to honor her, as well as John Oliver, who, in a world of vacuous and disposable commentary, is going deeper and getting results.”

Past winners have include Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, singer -songwriter Frank Ocean along with Pakistani social activist Malala Yousafzai, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates along with Nicki Minaj.
