John Early Reveals His Toni Collette Obsession on Late Night

If you’re a John Early fan, like we are at the IBang, you’ll want to watch his appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers from Tuesday night because he was being very John Early-ish.

John visited Late Night to talk about the new film he’s appearing in, “Beatriz at Dinner“, starring Salma Hayek-Pinault and unlike most guests, instead of bringing a clip, John Early brought three. That’s because they were embarrassingly short and the total words that John said in all three clips equaled just one. Like any artist with John Early’s talent, he took offense when Seth Meyers called his role in the film, as Evan the Caterer, a “small part”. John Early explained that his part was the glue that holds the whole film together. And at one point while filming, Salma even told John, “Your butt is magical.”

After Early’s trademark uncomfortability had played out, he asked the audience, “Can we drop the scene?” and that’s when the actual interview began. The conversation with John and Seth quickly led to John’s obsession with the actress Toni Collette. John said he discovered her work when he was 11 years old and saw her movie, “Clockwatchers“. He was instantly in love and his passion for all things Collette still burns today. He said as “a burgeoning gay boy” watching her performance in that film made him gasp. On Late Night, he actually did gasp. John said that he was so enthralled with her that he even started a Toni Collette fansite.

The highlight of the interview was John Early’s impression of Toni Collette as Lynn Sear, the mother of Haley Joel Osment’s character in the 1999 mega-hit “The Sixth Sense“. On Late Night, Seth Meyers played the part of Haley Joel, while John acted out the scene where the two of them are in the car together when Haley Joel character said he had talked to Lynn’s dead mother. After the impression, John said, it’s shocking that he isn’t on Saturday Night Live. In fact, he never heard back from SNL after he did auditioned for the cast. Seth has connections. Make this happen Meyers! You can watch this brilliant impression in the clips below from the Late Night YouTube channel. It’s worth the click. Also included below, is a backstage photo that John Early posted on his Instagram with fellow Late Night guest, Courtney Love. Looks like they bonded and are on their way to being besties.
