Thursday night at The Stand Comedy Club in New York City, auditions for Montreal’s Just for Laughs’ New Faces were happening all night and those who stayed for the late show got treated to a surprise.
Host Aaron Berg brought up John Early and Kate Berlant to run a set they’re performing on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon tonight. John and Kate are two of our favorite collaborators in comedy right now. Their chemistry is, and always has been, on par with great comedy teams throughout history, and they have an amazing new web series out on Vimeo called 555. They’re also out touring to support the release.
I don’t want to give away anything about the set they’re running tonight, but it’s incredibly funny and 100% John and Kate. Expect something unconventional. The appearance came as a surprise because John and Kate weren’t on the initial line up for the Tonight Show, but a source told us they were added to the schedule late. Good news for last night’s audience who got the chance to see the live run and good news for the Tonight Show audience.

If you’re not familiar with Early and Berlant you should check out Netflix’s “The Characters”, a series that gives a half hour to stand out performers in sketch and character work. Both have their own episodes, and appear as supporting cast members in each other’s. John and Kate have been performing together and separately on stage in New York City for years, and this year we got to see Early c0-starring in TBS’ ensemble series Search Party.
There aren’t many double acts doing the Tonight Show these days, if you’re not planning to sit home and wait for it to come on, set your DVR.
