Joe Pera on Conan: “My Sons Are Going to Dunk on Your Sons”
New York-by-way-of-Buffalo comedian Joe Pera made his late night debut last year on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and yesterday he graced the stage of Warner Brothers Studios in California for an episode of Conan.
Pera did what he does best, delivering a slow, plodding set that you just couldn’t help but laugh at. Pera delights in drawing out pauses and making the audience feel uncomfortable, spending a solid 90+ seconds polling the audience about how tall they think his sons will be. That’s the key to his act, though; Making the audience uncomfortable to the point that they’re nervously waiting for the punchline, so anxious to laugh that when the punch does come, the laughter floods out. Pera has carved out a niche for himself in this regard, his style having landed him gigs with Adult Swim and MTV in the past and leading to the creation of multiple video series like The Perfect Week and Shooting Hoops with Joe.
