Melissa Rivers shared some difficult details on the Today Show about the death of her mother Joan Rivers last year. In an interview with Matt Lauer, Melissa talked about finding out that her mother had stopped breathing while undergoing a routine medical procedure to treat acid reflux. She also told Lauer about the lawsuit the she’s filed against Yorkville Endoscopy where her mom went into distress and all the reasons why Melissa thinks Joan’s death was “100 % preventable”.

As part of her Today Show interview, Melissa Rivers read from her new memoir “The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation”. The excerpt covered that last moments of Joan’s life in the hospital.

“I slept on the cot next to my mother’s bed that night with some of the lights still on and the TV blasting, just the way she liked it,” she said. “In the morning, when it was time to remove the ventilator, she was surrounded by those who loved her most and whom she loved most. I lay in the bed and held her for a while. And after a few hours, she was finally gone. I didn’t have to tell her I loved her. She knew. She didn’t have to tell me she loved me. I knew.”

“The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation” goes on sale Tuesday at Amazon.com and in book stores.
