Jim Carrey Slams NFL
Comedian, actor and political artist Jim Carrey has been using his creative talents to satirize political figures in a series of paintings, and today while everyone else was busy reacting to Roseanne Barr, he had his attentions elsewhere– with the NFL.
Carrey posted his latest painting on Twitter today satirizing the relationship between the NFL, President Trump and big money corporate sponsors. He attacked the NFL for siding with Trump who he called “a draft-dodging racist” who uses “fake patriotism” to “squash peaceful protest.” He also complained that the NFL exploits players for three years before abandoning them.
Carrey asked corporations to “rethink sponsoring moral cowardice” and then used NFL sponsor Nationwide insurance as an example, suggesting that Americans might start to rethink “whose side Nationwide is really on.”
NFL — who exploits players for 3yrs then abandons them to a lifetime of pain — sided with a draft-dodging racist who uses fake patriotism to squash peaceful protest. Carrey received over 35,000 “likes” for the post and over 1,000 comments including Papa John’s who was quick to distance themselves from Carrey’s pointed finger, saying “Papa John’s is not the official national pizza sponsor of the NFL.” The national pizza chain had held that position for eight years until in February they announced that the league and the company had “mutually” parted ways mid agreement. The move was connected to the protests, but they were hardly on the side of free speech- the company’s CEO had said that players protesting during the anthem was hurting business and that they were “disappointed the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this.”
