Jim Carrey Pilot Will Look at the Dark Side of Hollywood Comedy Clubs in the 70s

Variety has learned that Jim Carrey has landed a pilot order at Showtime for “I’m Dying Up Here.”

Carrey is working with writer and stand up comic Dave Flebotte, to produce the series based on a William Knoedelseder book. L.A.’s Comedy Store was a focal point of the book along with the Store’s infamous owner Mitzi Shore. The series will take place in the 70’s at the famous LA comedy clubs will explore the inspired and the damaged inspired and damaged personalities throughout the business both on and off stage.

Jonathan Levine will direct the one hour pilot, which was written by Dave Flebotte who is also exec producing with Carrey.

“The 1970s L.A. comedy scene gave rise to some of the biggest and most influential performers of the last half-century,” said Showtime President David Nevins. “Who better than Jim Carrey and Dave Flebotte, who were both there, to tell the story of that special era along with the complicated and talented performers that dared to grab an open mic.”

“I’m Dying Up Here” is set to shoot this fall.

Showtime also announced on Tuesday that they are planning an adaptation of Patti Smith’s critically revered book “Just Kids” as a miniseries.
