Jenny Slate Re-teams With Obvious Child Writers

Jenny Slate has found a groove with the writers of “Obvious Child”. The trio is nearing production’s start date for their next project on May 23rd. The writers of Slate’s 2014 romantic comedy, Gillian Robespierre and Elisabeth Holm, have teamed up to write and direct a disillusioned ode to the ‘90s, “Landline”. Their two films together bookmark work on a pilot for FX the three shot in 2015, with Robespierre directing.

“Landline” follows two sisters and a mother discovering unwanted truths about their lives in Manhattan in 1995. Jenny Slate is joined by Edie Falco and Abby Quinn to comprise the three mini-generations of a family. Slate plays the older sister discovering her wild side, Falco as the mother struggling to keep her family together and achieve everything else and Quinn as the youngest child who’s discovered her father is having an affair. John Turturro (“Mia Madre”, “Night Of”) and Jay Duplass (“Transparent”, “The Mindy Project”) also star.

The film seems similar in tone to “Obvious Child” if not comparable in plot. Both are rambling, sometimes hopeless female-driven dramedies. If truly similar, “Landline” will find comedy in its character’s vulnerabilities and flaws, like “Obvious Child”. The trio’s moved on from a semi-autobiographical story about a female comedian to something equally plausible as being torn from their own lives, but more refreshing as an ensemble film. While Abby Quinn is relatively unknown despite work on “Law and Order: SVU”, Edie Falco has incredible credits, including “The Sopranos” and Louis C.K.’s “Horace and Pete”. On the other side of the camera, the project is helmed by even more powerful women. Holm is producing “Landline” alongside Gigi Pritzker via OddLot Entertainment and OddLot’s Rachel Shane is executive producing, as well as the production company’s Stacey Keppler co-producing.

With three upcoming dramas (“Gifted” alongside Chris Evans, “Aardvark” with Jon Hamm and “Brain on Fire” opposite Chloe Grace Moretz), Slate’s busy moving her career towards vulnerable dramatic roles.
