Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is Happening, Mallrats 2 and Clerks 3 are Out!

Kevin Smith, director of such cult classics as Clerks, Dogma, Mallrats and the Jay and Silent Bob series has announced via Facebook that he has written a script for a Jay and Silent Bob reboot.

In a lengthy post, Smith filled in his fans on where he stands with his current projects. Right off the bat, he made it clear that part of the reason why he wound up working on this script is because his plans for Clerks III and Mallrats 2 were both thwarted; Clerks was due to one of the four lead actors opting out of the film (so, either Jeff Anderson or Brian O’Halloran), and Mallrats, due to the fact that the film eventually transformed into a series that Smith has since had trouble finding a home for.

Smith admitted that he no longer owns the rights to Clerks, Mallrats or Dogma, but that he does still have full ownership over Jay and Silent Bob. While he’s been keeping busy directing his passion-project films like Yoga Hosers and Tusk and select episodes of CW shows like Supergirl and The Flash, Smith admits that he just can’t resist the lure that is his original, familiar universe.

“So while I love playing with someone else’s new toys on @cwtheflash and @Supergirl, I’m getting eager to play with my old toys again in the inter-connected View Askewniverse I spent the first half of my career creating,” said Smith in the post. “And so all last month, I had the time of my life laughing while writing ‘Jay and Silent Bob Reboot’ – a fun flick in which the Jersey boys have to go back to Hollywood to stop a brand new reboot of the old ‘Bluntman & Chronic Movie’ they hated so much.”

The film is supposed to be a dig at Hollywood’s penchant for reboots, and promises to be as silly and irreverent as its predecessors. Smith states that negotiations with Miramax have gone well so far, and that he’s confident that the movie will be shooting by this summer.
