How NOT To Drive In Heavy Fog…

An old lady has difficulty driving through fog and becomes part of the problem ahead of her. She’s the one driving the F-150.

American drivers are not taught to look any further then the car in front of them.  And our tests in almost every state are done at <30 MPH. and for god sake the reason that almost every car built today has yellow flashers is so you can see them in low visibility, I use them even in heavy traffic when my lane on the highway stops..  it gets the attention of the texting moron closing in on me at 80 mph, who can’t look up from their iPhone long enough to see your stopped.

treekiller It’s illegal to use your hazard lights while you’re driving. I can’t stand people that use them! Most cars don’t have yellow indicators on the back anymore, so all you’re doing is flashing your brake lights at people, and delaying the reaction time from people noticing when you’re actually stopping. I wish cops would enforce that more.

Peculier you are 100% correct, In my state of Florida, flashers are only legal when traveling in a funeral procession. unless your vehicle is stopped , (see above)  However When  we have our torrential downpours here in FL. that start and stop without warning, it’s a godsend at times. (or at least until you can get to a safe location)  In this dumb ladies case she might have seen that Isuzu had that driver done the correct thing and illuminated his flashers.
Of course other countries require a rear foglight and most cars imported here don’t have them, but occasionally you’ll see an Audi, or Volvo driver cruising around with theirs on, since we don’t teach or drivers how to use them, (look like a single bright red light (usually offset to the left)
Also all modern Porsches, Fiats, Volvo and many other cars built in Europe illuminate the flashers under extreme hard breaking, or when airbags deploy automatically, I know at least the Volvo and Porsche are sold here with the option,  and Pretty much every modern car has a G-sensor for the Stability control, so you’re going to see more of this. which is a Sure fire way out of a ticket since how can an automatic safety function be illegal?
Plus no cop is going to get out of his dry cruiser to write a chickenshit ticket in the rain.

treekillerPeculier There’s absolutely no way that it’s illegal to use your hazard lights in the situation is describing.  When your lane on the highway goes from 65 to 10 in 5 seconds it is -always- a great idea to put on your hazard lights because of the moron behind you who may or may not be paying enough attention to react quickly enough.

treekiller Peculier holy shit that’s awesome! If i had that I would feel a LOT better about those rare occasions that you need to slow down really quickly on the highway and someone is 3 car lengths behind you.

BAC 420 treekiller Peculier Direct quote from the FL drivers license handbook…
“Do you keep your Hazard Lights off while driving in the Rain?
Q: Is it legal to drive with your hazard lights on in the rain?
A: No! Rain or shine, Florida law says keep your hazards off unless you are stalled or sitting on
the side of the road. Hazard lights are only supposed to be used when you are stationary.
Some drivers think it is easier to see and be seen with blinking lights on in a blinding rainstorm,
fog or when smoke from a wildfire reduces visibility.
However, hazards disable the turn signals. They also make it harder to tell if the motorist ahead
is tapping on the brakes. Other drivers might assume the hazard lights are being properly used
and swerve to avoid a vehicle they think has stopped in the highway.
If it is raining too hard to see, the Florida Highway Patrol advises drivers to pull off the road and
then turn on your hazards to wait out the storm.”
        “Four-way emergency
flashers should only be used while your vehicle is legally stopped or disabled on the highway or

treekiller Peculier Almost all German cars have that option. I’m in FL too, and I drive for a living, so I know what you mean by the sudden storms. My work van (Ford Transit Connect) has the rear fog lights, that I do use when the rain gets heavy. I think all cars should be required to have them.

PeculierBAC 420treekiller “and swerve to avoid a vehicle they think has stopped in the highway.”

When you suddenly stop on the highway due to volume ahead it is in fact legal and a good idea to turn on your hazard lights.

They do nothing in the fog though and the rest of that law and what you said are true. Just slow down or pull over when you can’t see……
