What Happened on SNL This Week: Sexual Offenders Get Skewered, Tiffany Haddish’s Star Rises
This week Saturday Night Live was all about sexual predators. From the cold open to the last sketch, there were jokes, jabs and stabs at all of the men who have been accused of sexual harassment, sexual assault and other sexual misconduct throughout the episode. SNL writers, who were accused of ducking the Harvey Weinstein issue the first week the allegations came to light, were not going to make the same mistake this time, and hit the ground running with a Louis C.K. joke just moments in to the show. The cold open focused on another sex scandal- Roy Moore. Mikey day played the now infamous Alabama Senate nominee. Kate McKinnon appeared in the sketch as Jeff Sessions and remarked, “There’s so many men out there acting like monsters. “Mr. Weinstein, Kevin Spacey … the president. Daddy, has this been happening forever? Have I both fostered and benefited from a culture of systemic oppression? No? Well, that’s a relief.”
Weekend Update of course also covered the topic thoroughly. “It’s a good weekend to stay inside,” Colin Jost said, “since it’s 20 degrees out and everyone you’ve ever heard of is a sex monster,” and that was only the beginning. Roy Moore took hits from both Weekend Update anchors, and Jost talked about Louis C.K. and took a quiz about sexual misconduct in the workplace administered by Claire from H.R. (played by Cecily Strong).
Louis C.K. wasn’t the only comedian experiencing anger from Saturday Night Live fans. Last night Larry David returned to SNL a week after hosting the show and getting some social media hate mail about a concentration camp joke. He appeared as Bernie Sanders in a sketch about the DNC making a comeback, and joked, “we’re really going to lace into people if they don’t say what’s politically correct. Like these comics out there who think it’s OK to make jokes about concentration camps. That guy should rot in hell.”
And of course there was Tiffany Haddish, who was by no means an afterthought. It’s easy to see why she’s a rising superstar- she’s smart, she’s funny and knows how to work a room. Haddish was as terrific on this week’s SNL as she has been everywhere else this past year– she stole the movie “Girls Trip” from her co-stars Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Regina Hall this summer, and was one of the break out stars, along with Lil Rel Howery, on the NBC sitcom “The Carmichael Show” starring comedian Jerrod Carmichael and she’ll also have a co-starring role in the new Tracy Morgan TV series, “The Last O.G.” premiering next spring on TBS. Last night she showed Saturday Night Live fans what she’s got with a terrific stand up monologue, and plenty of great sketch appearances. She also made history as the first black female stand up comedian to host the show.
