What Happened on Saturday Night Live Last Night: Lost Star Trek, Morning Joe and Finally, a Great Weekend Update Character

Chris Pine hosted a solid episode of Saturday Night Live last night. There weren’t any major highs or lows, but there were some personal favorites and a few items that got news outlets talking including a funny cold open taking a few shots at Trump, and a few more at the weirdness of Morning Joe‘s Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough. Kate McKinnon and Alex Moffat were spot on as the two hosts and Alec Baldwin made an audio only appearance as a caller to the show who was confused about Cinco de Mayo. The evening’s first sketch kept the political theme going, with a parody of 90’s kids TV show “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” that instead asked “Where in the World is Kellyanne Conway?” who seems to be as absent as a Scientologist in Clearwater these days.

Chris Pine had a decent monologue with a musical number that addressed the confusion about the different Chris’s who are getting big movie roles these days. “I’m not Chris Hemsworth” he sang, or Chris Evans or Chris Pratt. Funny, but if you missed it, you can skip it. You get the idea.

The two best moments of the night both came courtesy of Bobby Moynihan. One arrived in the middle of a sketch that didn’t make a lot of sense. Titled “Auto Shop“, a group of mechanics reluctantly admit they love RuPaul’s Drag Race. Its odd, but the lip sync dance-off between Bobby Moynihan and Chris Pine makes it worth the watch.

But nothing was funnier than the “Lost Star Trek Episode” starring Pine as Kirk, and Bobby Moynihan as “Spocko”, the lesser known brother of Mr. Spock with his catchphrase, “now that’s a Star Trek” and “live long and party.” Kyle Mooney appears as Spock, and Sasheer Zamata plays Uhura. Kenan Thompson provides narration as Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Other segments included a digital short parodying Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, a couples game night turns awkward when Cecily Strong and Chris Pine turn a fun game about TV theme songs into a night at Le Mis, a silly sketch about two SWAT team officers on a stakeout watching a bizarre party go down, a parody of a Big Brother type show with people living in a house together, starring Pine and Kyle Mooney, and a World Peace Rap featuring Beck Bennett as Stav D. You can see all of them on the SNL app.

Weekend Update had a strong week, covering the AHCA, President Trump’s first 100 days, Cinco de Mayo, and racism in baseball. And something rare– a Weekend Update character that was genuinely funny, and not played by Kate McKinnon.  Weekend Update‘s nervous new meteorologist is Dana Lazarus, well played by Vanessa Bayer.

SNL returns next week on May 13, 2017 with host Melissa McCarthy and musical guest Haim.
