Gordon Willis (1931 – 2014)
Gordon Willis, a cinematographer of the highest order, passed away this weekend at the age of 82.
A New York City native first came to prominence in capturing urban decay in films such as Klute, The Landlord and All The President’s Men. Willis’ work on The Godfather sealed the deal. His use of shadows captured Don Corleone within the full relaxation of his power and Michael getting completely consumed by it. Willis would later begin a long collaboration with Woody Allen starting with Annie Hall and reaching its apex with Manhattan and Stardust Memories. Allen has often gone on record as saying that he learned more about directing working with Willis. Incredibly, Gordon Willis never won an Academy Award for his work, but did receive an Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement. With a resume that represents some of the most seminal films of the 70s – and all-time, Gordon Willis leaves behind a body of work that very few can match.
