Going to College in New York Just Got a Lot Worse

It’s been announced that smoking will be banned on all New York State College campuses by 2014. At all New York City  College campuses, the smoking ban comes into effect this fall. So, if you want to go to an affordable college in the state of New York, you can’t smoke. If you want to get a higher education, you can’t smoke. Your rights are not slowly being taken away anymore, they’re being taken at a blistering rate.

Hey America!  Your balls are beyond busted. That’s right, no smoke in between classes for you students.  Even though you’re on college campuses that are on city streets.  Get ready rest of the country. Get ready to climb into the matrix pods now so you can just exist long enough to die.

They should just designate smoking areas and not completely ban smoking. I'm a non smoker by the way.

Why not just make Cigarettes and Cigars Illegal......Oh that's right Politicians need the Tobacco Companies Campaign Contributions.  So no 20 oz soda and No Smoking at NYU...At least they still have Chocolate Donuts

Hip Hip Hipochracy.  They Tax the sh*t out of a pack of Cigarettes,  They Claim the extra money will be used for Anti Smoking Programs.....I smoked for 45 years and it was the hardest thing to Quit, but I would never tell anybody to stop if they don't want to.  You not just make Cigarettes Illegal.....Oh that's right Politicians need their campaign contributions

How is this worse for anybody wanting to go to college in NY?  NY bars and restaurants started to make a lot more money when the smoking ban went into effect like 10 years ago.  I don't patronize establishments that permit smoking, but that is much choice.  I've read the US Constitution multiple times as well as case law on the subject and can not find anywhere in there where it mentions the right to smoke.  So these and any other smoking bans are not taking away any of your rights.

Besides where were all of you people who are crying about your "right" to smoke being taken away when your actual RIGHT to keep and bare arms has been slowly taken away.  Maybe if you would have stood up to the gov't then, you might have some more help on your side, not to mention its a lot harder for the gov't to control the citizens when they're armed - the gov't is supposed to be controlled by the citizens, not the other way around. The 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution is what is supposed to keep it this way - its also the only way to keep a gov't in check and in power solely for the benefit of the people.

Now of course it should be up to the individual establishment whether to allow smoking on the premises or not, but a gov't that is not afraid of the citizens can do whatever it wants, just like in Syria.

Fucking liberal bullshit! Daddy knows what's best for us. I'm happy in my right-leaning suburb. I'm sure I'll get shit for saying that but I'm in a safe city with very reasonable taxes and great city services and I'm left the fuck alone by my local government. Facts are facts.

I don't think I would have ever finished a paper without 5-10 smoke breaks. College kids are fucked now.

Give them one concession to make them go away, they'll want more.  It won't end.  I give my 3 year old two stories at bedtime, she asks for three.  She'll keep asking for more until I walk out of the room, shut the door and let her cry it out.

This recently happened at Siena College in Albany (Private College)..... even with an outcry from the student body, 80% of the student population lives on campus, they said suck it up and deal with....... the alternative given: smoke in your car, or on the side of a major road.....doesn't seem like a smart idea for someone trying to have a cigarette ... on the side of a road....when they are drunk....thats safe.

I'm positive that the healthcare savings from punishing smokers is going to get passed on to the consumer. Premiums on the way down for sure now!!!!!!!!

Hicks, I agree 100% with you but if you are going to smoke with the healthcare system we have in place then you must sign a waiver that states you will not accept medical treatment when you have a stroke, heart attack, lung cancer, copd

I didn't see it in the story or a cursory search, but is this ban enforced through capital punishment, jail time, or fines?

Assuming it's fines, can't we just call this what it is: a tax? If I wanted to "ban" something I would simply execute people who continue to do it. If I wanted to make money off it, I would fine people who continue to do it and are unlikely to stop.
