Garry Shandling’s Art Collection For Sale

The friends and family of the late comedian Garry Shandling, who passed away in March, have coordinated with art dealers in New Mexico to sell off some of Shandling’s art collection at a Santa Fe art show this week. Objects of Art Santa Fe is an annual art festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a favorite vacation spot of Shandling’s. Shandling had a love for southwestern and Native American art and owned an extensive collection of items, from paintings by Alfredo Ramos Martinez and Francisco Zuniga to Navajo tapestries.

A native of Tucson, Arizona, Shandling grew up with an appreciation for Southwestern art that he carried with him all his life. His home in California housed many works that he’d acquired over the years, and over 40 of those pieces will be shown at this week’s event. There will be a vast variety of pieces on display, including a $43,000 painting of nuns by artist Alfredo Ramos Martinez.

“He definitely was a collector. He definitely was involved in the art world but he wasn’t super public about that,” said Kim Martindale, co-producer of Objects of Art Santa Fe.

“Obviously Garry enjoyed the Southwest and enjoyed Santa Fe and this style of work so it was an exciting combination that we were doing the Objects show at the same time that they were ready to release the collection,” Martindale added.

Objects of Art Santa Fe will take place from Thursday to Sunday this week. On top of the Shandling display, the show will also feature works from Cuban artist José Bedia, Mexican sculptor Betsabeé Romero and a host of other pieces from both local and international artists.
