Fox Renews Two Hit Comedies, Leaves Others in Limbo

In a not-so-surprising move, Fox has issued renewals for popular comedies The Last Man on Earth and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The half-hour comedies join The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Gotham, Empire, Bones, and Scream Queens on the roster of shows that will be returning for the 2016-2017 cycle.  The Last Man on Earth stars Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Mary Steenburgen, Mel Rodriguez and Cleopatra Coleman. Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars Andy Samberg, and an ensemble cast that includes Andre Braugher, Jo Lo Truglio, and Chelsea Peretti.

Popular comedy and network veteran New Girl has yet to be renewed, as star Zooey Deschanel’s pregnancy interfered with the filming schedule. Seeing as New Girl has consistently pulled in solid ratings for the network, there’s a good chance the show will be back, assuming Deschanel is willing and able to continue shooting. New shows Grandfathered, The Grinder, and Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life are still in tv purgatory, as all three have been lukewarm at best in the ratings. That’s not a great sign for viewers who love watching John Stamos and Rob Lowe play attractive men in suits. Most of the other big networks have renewed the bulk of their respective lineups, so Fox’s reluctance to issue renewals for these star-driven shows does not bode well for their futures.
