Fox Drops the Axe on Three Star Studded Comedy Series; Greenlights Two New Ones

Today Fox dropped the news that three of its popular comedy series would be getting the boot. The Mick, Last Man on Earth and Brooklyn Nine Nine were all cancelled.

“The Mick,” fronted by “Always Sunny’s” Kaitlin Olson was off to a strong start last year, but the network opted not to give the show a third season. A second season ratings slide seems to be behind the decision.

Fox’s cancellation of “Brooklyn Nine Nine” starring Andy Samberg was also somewhat expected– the rumor is that the team was planning to wind down the series in its Fifth season. The series also starred Andre Braugher, Chelsea Peretti, Terry Crews and Jo Lo Truglia.

The big surprise is the surprise cancel of the Will Forte helmed “Last Man on Earth” which just finished its fourth season with a cliffhanger. But there is some thought that the series could continue on another network or streaming platform. Kristin Schaal, January Jones, and Mary Steenburgen co star along with a whos who of comedy celebrity guest stars.

As previously announced, New Girl also ended its Fox run this year. No word yet on the fate of Bobs Burgers, Family Guy, or Ghosted, but we do know that the Bobs Burger team is getting a run on the big screen in 2020.

Fox has also announced one new comedy series. “The Cool Kids” comes from Paul Fruchborn, and Charlie Day, and will star Martin Mull, David Alan Grier and Vicki Lawrence clicque-ish 70 year olds who square off in a retirement community.

Also picked up, the much talked about “Rel” starring Lil Rel Howery. Sinbad will play his father. The show is written and executive produced by Rel’s former “Friends of the People” co-stars Josh Rabinowitz and Kevin Barnett. The series is inspired by Rel’s own life and will be about how Rel’s values are put to the test when he finds out his wife is having an affair with his barber. The series is set post divorce, as Rel tries to rebuild his life on the West Side of Chi-town.
