This Saturday, as part of the New York Comedy Festival, Caroline’s on Broadway will hold their annual New York’s Funniest contest.  The yearly competition searches among New York City’s younger comics, to find who is New York’s funniest.

Dave Smith is one of the contestants performing in the New York’s Funniest contest, so we asked him five questions about comedy and New York.  You can follow him on twitter @ComicDaveSmith and see him this Saturday at Carolines at 4pm. You can also hear him regularly on the Legion of Skanks podcast.

Here are his 5 questions.

The IBang:  What’s been your most interesting New York subway experience.

Dave Smith: I’ve had so many interesting NYC subway experiences, it’s hard to pick one. I grew up here, so I’ll give you one this week. The other day this guy came on, and he sang “Happy” that nerd guy song. It’s a very positive song with a very positive message. And then I gave him a dollar, cause I was like, I’m going to give this guy a dollar, that was a good song. And then I felt good about myself after giving him that dollar. And then, he walked onto the train and some Asian lady was reading her book, and I guess he got annoyed that she didn’t make eye contact. And he just started yelling some of the most racist shit at this Asian lady. And then I just realized I had contributed to a hate crime. So that was not….positive.

The IBang:  Who is the biggest name comedian you’ve been bumped for.

Dave Smith: Probably pretty big names. Chappelle maybe? I’ve been not on a show because Chapelle came through for Stand Up New York. It hurts more when I get bumped for a no-name. Someone I’ve never heard of.

The IBang:  What is the best local place to see live music performed?

Dave Smith: I think the best place to see live music– I like Irving Plaza a lot. For me it’s like a venue that size. A mid-sized venue.

The IBang:  What’s your favorite coffee shop to hang out in?

Dave Smith: We have this little place in the village called Starbucks. It’s a New York original. It’s really good coffee.

The IBang:  Who are some other comedians you hang out with?

Dave Smith: Some of my closest friend comedians are Big Jay Oakerson, Luis Gomez, Gary Vider, Sam Morrill, Nate Bargatze, guys like that. All white and they also have this other criteria of being funny.
