Eyesore Lucille Ball Statue is Out
One very bizarre souvenir commemorating Lucille Ball’s legacy might be up for sale soon, if it’s not melted down first. A statue to commemorate Lucille Ball was erected in her upstate New York hometown of Celoron last year and immediately brought together the community closer in their shared disgust. The statue dubbed an eyesore and a horrifying nightmare inspired Facebook pages like, “We Love Lucy! Get Rid of This Statue”. The community prevailed and the original statue will soon be replaced by a new creation.
After the criticism, a nationwide competition ensued to replace the reviled statue. Sculptor Carolyn Palmer of Hudson Valley and her bronze creation won, and the artist cited her inspiration as, “the playful, animated and spontaneous Lucy [and] also the glamorous Hollywood icon”. The new statue will be revealed in a public ceremony at the Lucille Ball Memorial Park, hopefully to positive reviews. As for the old statue, who knows what fate lies ahead. Hopefully that fate includes eBay and a lot of determined bidders.
