Did Evil Dead Lead to Blood Simple? Coens Release Blood Simple Fake Trailer

How did cult classic camp horror film The Evil Dead help get the Coen Brothers’ first movie, Blood Simple made? Vanity Fair just released a story to celebrate the restoration (and theatrical re-release) of the Coens’ first film of which explains the weird convergence.

Joel Coen, who was the assistant editor on Evil Dead, became friends with Sam Raimi who convinced the brothers to make a fake trailer to show to potential investors. The Coens hired Evil Dead star (and future cult icon) Bruce Campbell to appear in the role that Dan Hedaya would eventually play in the film. Of course, this would lead to a few more collaborations between the Coen Brothers and Raimi, including the films Crimewave and The Hudsucker Proxy, along with Raimi’s cameo in Miller’s Crossing. As for Campbell, he continued to appear in just about every Raimi film (and now stars in TV’s Ash Vs Evil Dead), but he did have cameos in both the movie Fargo (in a clip of his appearance on a soap opera) and played Ronald Reagan on the TV series Fargo last year.
