Esquire Declares 1999 The Last Great Year In Movies

1999Esquire is saying that there hasn’t been a great year for movies since 1999. That year, of course, was the year that Fight Club, The Matrix, American Beauty, Run Lola Run, Go, Boys Don’t Cry, The Sixth Sense, American Pie, Three Kings, Election, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, The Blair Witch Project, and Office Space were all released. In 1999, Esquire contends, original hits filled theaters, as opposed to today’s releases which are all sequels, super hero movies and sequels to super hero movies. And they have a point….except that the top grossing film of 1999 was Star Wars Episode 1. Prequels must not count.
