Take Eight Great GigaPixel Trips

Remember that super huge camera file that let you zoom in so far that you could see your buddy napping at the Super Bowl?   That was a Gigapixel.   Obviously there’s no substitute for being somewhere, but if you can’t– you can check out a Gigapixel.  You can tour a place in incredible levels of detail and even see some things you wouldn’t be able to check out in person.   Here are a few of our favorites.

Paris 26 Gigapixel

Other than the Super Bowl GP, this might be the greatest one out there.  It’s got everything you want — vast amounts of ground to cover, stunning vistas, bright beautiful close-ups, and a side guide to whisk you directly to zoom in on places of interest.  You can wander the streets, browse around the city or go straight to city landmarks.  View the Paris Gigapixel here.

Machu Picchu 16 Gigapixels

You’ll almost feel like you’ve visited.  Because you’re on an open mountaintop, you can see everything– right down to tourist tshirts– unobstructed.  View Machu Picchu here.

Yosemite National Park in 17 Gigapixels

Check out the view from Glacier Point where you’ll see every tree, trail and every inch of granite of Half Dome in incredible detail without having to climb it.  Just beautiful.  View Yosemite’s Glacier Point Here.

Obama’s Inauguration  1.5 Gigapixels

It’s a lot smaller than the other images that made our list but it got bonus points for the ability to zoom in and check out what Bill and Hillary are doing at that exact moment or George and Babs, or various other celebrities who attended the event.  View Obama’s Inauguration here.

Space Shuttle Discovery’s Flight Deck 2.75 Gigapixels

Zoom in on every detail in the dashboard.  If you visited the cockpit yourself you would never have the time to see every knob, every dial and every readout.   A few suggested zoom ins help you navigate around too.  View the Discovery Flight Deck here.

Shanghai Skyline 212 Gigapixels

It’s the largest GP on our list and was created from 12,000 photos stitched together.  Zoom in to see license plates, people hanging laundry out their windows, or just look for Shanghai Waldo.  Discover Shanghai here.

Cannes 65 Gigapixels

You’ve always wanted to see Cannes, right?  You get city, town, mountains and water.  You could spend hours scrolling around.  Explore Cannes here.

Sevilla 111 Gigapixels

There is so much to look at here.  observe inch by inch La Giralda’s belfry, La Torre del Oro’s merlons, the details of the Cathedral’s walls, and more than one thousand little details and corners of Seville,  and you could get lost in the construction site alone for awhile.  Instead of pointing out city landmarks, you can zoom in on tiny details like a cyclist.   Visit Sevilla here.

Bonus:  Parker Bennet Curry Library 6.6 Gigapixels

We just threw this in because we loved that you could browse the shelves of this cute Elementary School library in Bowling Green Kentucky.  View the PBC Library here.
