Did Google Rip Off Tom Scharpling?
Tom Scharpling of The Best Show took to social media after a Google ad for the new Chromebook was released that might sound pretty familiar to fans of The Best Show. The song in the Google ad bares some significant similarities to a song called “Come On Y’all It’s Time to Have Fun”, a Scharpling original creation that has been a recurring bit on his show.
In an exclusive statement given to The Interrobang, Scharpling said, “Look, I realize that “Come On Y’All It’s Time To Have Fun” is not the second coming. But it is something I joked about on the radio multiple times, enough so that a variety of artists like Nick Diamonds (founder of The Unicorns and Islands) and Max Mystic would record full band arrangements of it. And they took it because they can. I know I don’t have a shot at getting money from Google. They don’t only hold the keys to the castle. They ARE the castle. But I am going to give this everything I’ve got. I will make Google know that they have taken what is mine.”
Scharpling said he’s totally understanding of sharing. “I have never claimed that my radio show The Best Show is the most original thing ever. I have been influenced by those who came before me, so it is legitimately flattering to hear elements of my show in other places. It’s the continuum of creativity.” He also joked that he knows SiriusXM producer Chris Stanley might have borrowed some of Scharpling’s greatest hits and claiming he invented some of Chris Stanley’s popular catch phrases in 2011. He also for some reason he compared Stanley to a dog with a potato chip bag stuck on his head, but you know, in a charming way.
He added, “We are going full-on ANIMAL HOUSE here – if I’m gonna lose, everybody is gonna lose. Me and my ScopeBros wouldn’t have it any other way – I swear on my Blue Blockers.”
