Usually if you’re having breakfast in a Denny’s restaurant it’s because you stayed out to late and lure of a Grand Slam breakfast is too overwhelming to resist. If you happen to be in a certain Los Angeles area Denny’s late last week, you had another reason to be there – an impromptu performance from comedy icon Dick Van Dyke.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the star of television’s “The Dick Van Dyke Show” as well as stage and screen, stopped into a Denny’s restaurant with his a cappella group, The Vantastix. The group had just finished doing local television morning show “Good Day LA” and needed some breakfast. They were also hungry to entertain and broke into the theme song from Dick Van Dyke’s 1968 musical adventure film “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. The Vantastix mesmerized the Denny’s crowd with their performance sans instruments. You can watch the performance below.

At age 90, Dick Van Dyke proved that he didn’t need a Broadway stage, big screen movie or television sitcom to show that he’s still every bit as entertaining today. A table at Denny’s works just fine. The man who has won multiple Emmys, a Grammy, a Tony and the American Comedy Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor talked about age and how the secret is how you feel mentally on “Good Day LA”. He said, “Your perspective is everything. Some people say [age is] only a number and those kind of things — that’s baloney: It’s a number.”

If you’re not lucky enough to happen to bump into Dick Van Dyke in a Denny’s, you can see the comedy legend and The Vantastix in Cerritos, California at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, on Sunday August 28th at 3pm. Dick Van Dyke will be singing songs from his stage and screen work including Mary Poppins, Bye Bye Birdie as well as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, plus telling his great show business stories and then performing with The Vantastix.
