Dave Chappelle Speaks at Ohio Town Council Meeting Regarding Police Misconduct

Comedian Dave Chappelle made an appearance at a Yellow Springs, Ohio city council meeting this week to voice his concerns about how the local police department handled the town’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration in January.

Chappelle, who grew up part-time in the town and currently lives there with his family, was at the New Year’s Eve celebration when the police showed up and caused a bit of a scene. The gathering, which consisted (naturally) of some drunken revelers, but also parents with children, was by all accounts, a problem-free affair. However, only a few minutes after midnight, members of the Yellow Springs PD showed up in squad cars, rolling through the crowd blaring sirens in an attempt to disperse the crowd. In the process, the officers got into it with a member of the crowd and ended up firing two taser shots: one hitting the intended target, and one accidentally hitting an innocent person caught in the crossfire.

The story has been big news in the small town ever since, resulting in the resignation of the Yellow Springs Police Chief and a lengthy investigation. During a recent town hall meeting to discuss the issue, Chappelle stepped forward to share his thoughts on the event, which he referred to as a “huge gaffe” by the police department. His address was quick, level-headed and genuine, eliciting a wave of applause from the crowd as he left the podium. Chappelle 2020?
