“Everything old is new again,” the old (new) saying goes. People yearn for the past, for nostalgia, and companies like Nickelodeon and now MTV know this to be true. MTV plans to capitalize on that desire with the launch of MTV Classic, a rebranding of the VH1 Classic network. The new network will launch on August 1st, coinciding with MTV’s 35th birthday. MTV Classic will feature a wide variety of content from the last three decades, with the whole thing being kicked off at 6 a.m. with MTV Hour One, a re-airing of the very first hour of content ever played on MTV back in 1981.

The rest of the first day’s content consists of a Total Request Live retrospective and a marathon of rarely-seen MTV Unplugged performances from artists such as Erykah Badu, Bob Dylan and Nirvana. Luckily for comedy fans, the primetime slots are apparently going to have a focus on animated shows, of which MTV has a few hits. Beavis and Butt-Head, Daria and Aeon Flux will all be making their returns to primetime on the new network.

Fans of early 2000’s MTV will have plenty of content to wade through as well, as classics like Jackass, Pimp My Ride, Cribs, and Wonder Showzen will also fill out the network’s schedule. Fan favorites like The Real World and Road Rules will also be running on marathon schedules often.

Keeping to his promise to steer MTV back towards its music roots, MTV president Sean Atkins has said that the new network will prominently feature live music performances, concerts from the archives, music videos, and re-airs of shows like MTV Unplugged and Storytellers, a series that profiles musicians.

Basically, tuning into MTV Classic will be like getting hit with a nostalgia bomb with special depleted-nostalgia tips.

VH1 Classic will become MTV Classic on Monday, August 1st beginning at 6 a.m.
