Danny McBride Wrote Vice Principals 10 Years Ago
Danny McBride has another hit HBO series- Vice Principals is hilarious and everyone loves it. Tuesday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live Danny McBride told Kimmel that he and co-creator/co-star Jody Hill actually wrote the script ten years ago, but as a 90 minute screenplay. They ultimately decided the story needed more time to be told, and adapted the screenplay into a nine hour series for HBO.
McBride also explained how they decided on Charleston, South Carolina as the series’ filming location. Turns out that Bill Murray convinced them that Charleston was the greatest city in the world when they ran into him on a plane. McBride told the strange story about how they convinced Murray to be in the show- he appears in episode one as the outgoing principal.
Everyone knows Murray is notoriously hard to reach- he doesn’t use agents or managers, and there are stories about how he doesn’t even have contact info. Well apparently he at least has an email address that he reads because McBride says he emailed Bill to ask him to be on the show. In true Bill Murray fashion, he responded with cryptic instructions. “He wrote back this message, I would love to have a hard copy delivered to the River Dogs Baseball Stadium tonight, I will leave six tickets at the box office for you.” McBride said they put a copy of the script in one of those silver metal briefcases you always see in the movies. When McBride arrived at the stadium, he got ambushed with a mic, and filmed for an episode of Anthony Bordain’s show. The end result was, Murray liked the script, picked the part he wanted to play and that’s how you get shit done.
Oh and if you’re wondering which episode of Bordain you should watch to see McBride don’t bother. He got cut.
