Did Daily Show Force Redskins Showdown?

Some Washington Redskins fans are upset about a Daily Show segment which hasn’t aired yet where they feel they will be portrayed as racists.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart set up the segment to be taped in Washington DC at DuPont Circle hotel. Redskins fans were recruited via Twitter to be interviewed by Daily Show correspondent Jason Jones. According to the Washington Post, well into the interviews, the fans found themselves confronted by a group of Native Americans led by Amanda Blackhorse who was the lead plaintiff in the case that cost the Washington Redskins their trademark protection.

The Native American group accused the fans of supporting a racist mascot. The people who had been chosen to represent the team said they had no idea this was coming. One person claims he specifically asked Daily Show producers if there would be a debate on the subject rather than just the fans stating their point of view. He says he was told that wouldn’t happen.

Another Redskins fan said she left in tears. She said she didn’t want to appear on the show and wanted her release torn up. Producers told her they didn’t think that was possible. She said -“It was disingenuous. The Native Americans accused me of things that were so wrong. I felt in danger. I didn’t consent to that. I am going to be defamed.”

It’s still not clear how much if any of the segment will air on the Daily Show. The Post said producers for the show have either declined to comment or not returned phone calls and emails.
