Cristela Alonzo’s Preemptive Goodbye To Her Sitcom
Cristela Alonzo isn’t worried about a sophomore jinx. She’s worried about a sophomore year. The comedian’s ABC sitcom aired its season one finale on Friday night and she doesn’t know if the network is going to bring the series back for a second season. In case “Cristela” doesn’t get renewed, the series’ star posted a goodbye online. Her comedy series did get a full season. However she writes, “We shot twenty-two episodes of this show and yet hardly anyone knows we’re on the air.”
Also in her blog post found on Deadline, Cristela Alonzo took the opportunity to address criticisms of her show. Those included the character of her mother on the show being an Hispanic stereotype and complaints that not all Latino families are like that. In both cases, Cristela explained that the show is based on her own personal experiences growing up and that the situations and characters are true to her.
Most of all, Cristela Alonzo just wanted to thank everyone in case the show doesn’t get picked up for another season. She wrote, “If the show ends and tonight’s season finale is the last episode the world gets to see, just know that this show gave opportunities to Latino writers and actors that are hard to come by.” She added, “Thank you to everyone that has supported this show (and will hopefully continue to support it). I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you allowed me to become part of your lives. I really am so grateful for the year I was given. ”
