Conan is Going to Mexico City, Wall or No Wall

Is Conan O’Brien our best diplomat? Conan announced he will tape an episode of Conan in Mexico City, with an all Mexican staff, crew and Mexican audience.

Conan O’Brien has been a late-night host for well over twenty years now. A year or two ago, the host decided to add “world traveler” to his resume with an historic trip to Cuba, becoming the first American TV host to film in the country in over 50 years. Since then, he’s hopped jets to Armenia, Berlin, and both North and South Korea. Now, in the wake of crumbling relations between President Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, O’Brien has announced that he’ll next take Conan to Mexico City with Conan Without Borders: Made in Mexico.

O’Brien’s trips have all managed to be political statements without coming across as overtly political. The Cuba trip was in response to improving relations between the U.S. and Cuba, and the voyage to Berlin came during a time when Germany’s Angela Merkel was passing controversial legislation that seemed to echo the unpopular sentiments of Donald Trump. The point behind these trips is to reach out and become familiar with our neighbors around the world and show the similarities that we all share. It’s a much-needed olive branch in a world that seems so at odds at the moment.

The episode airs Wednesday March 1, 2017.
