Comedy Legend Assures You, You Don’t Know Dick

Comedian Dick Gregory, civil rights activist and the first black man to sit on a late night talk show interview couch, released his first studio album just days ago at the age of 83. Ill Fame Publishing collaborated with Gregory at I.V. Lab Studios in Chicago.

Coming in at number 82 on Comedy Central’s list of the Top 100 Stand Up Comedians of All Time, Gregory’s comedy career burned bright and fast. He went from performing killer sets at small clubs around Chicago to performing regularly for Hugh Hefner at his Chicago Playboy Club, even making a legendary appearance on Tonight Starring Jack Paar.

Gregory’s comedy career eventually gave way to his passionate political activism. He spoke in Selma, Alabama during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, he publicly criticized the findings of the Warren Commission, and even ran for president in 1968.

Other than the occasional appearance on various radio shows (such as Imus in the Morning) or on MTV2’s Wonder Showzen, Gregory has largely been inactive in comedy until now, which makes this sudden release all the more exciting.

“Few men in the world can claim to be living legends in their industry,” said Ill Fame co-founder David Mutschler. “Ill Fame Publishing is honored to announce our partnership with Dick Gregory on his inaugural studio album, ‘You Don’t Know Dick,’ and to have the opportunity to work with a national treasure, orator and scholar.”

You Don’t Know Dick can be bought on iTunes for $10.99.
