Comedian Gad Elmaleh Announces ‘Oh My Gad’ U.S. Theater Tour

Moroccan French comedian Gad Elmaleh recently announced that he will be taking his all-English stand up show, Oh My Gad, on a tour of a handful of theaters across the U.S. Elmaleh, who regularly sells out stadiums across Europe, has had to play to a smaller audience here in North America while he continues to build a name for himself among American comedy fans. It appears he’s succeeding in that endeavor, as he continues to sell out shows at Joe’s Pub in NYC and will be opening for Jerry Seinfeld during his June 8 performance at the Beacon Theater.

If you’re thinking that it sounds crazy that a comedian would opt to perform in his second language for foreign audiences over sold out stadium crowds in his home country, Elmaleh would probably agree with you. Like a true master, however, Elmaleh seeks to test himself. “As a joke and as an exaggerated impression of Americans, I say ‘I need to challenge myself,’” says Elmaleh. “But to be honest with you, it’s true.” Well, Elmaleh is getting his wish. After his opening performance for Seinfeld in June, the comic will be performing a slew of theater dates starting August 31 in Boston. He will then do shows in Washington DC, Toronto, Chicago, Vancouver, Seattle and Los Angeles before finishing up in Oakland on September 10. While these shows are the biggest that Elmaleh has performed in the U.S. thus far, they’re likely to go well if his media reception is any indication. The comic’s been doing the talk show rounds in recent months, making appearances on The Daily Show, The Nightly Show, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. He’s also been the subject of profiles by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, and The Los Angeles Times.

Tickets for the string of shows go on sale tomorrow, Friday March 25. The shows may very well prove to be a metamorphosis for the French comedian as he puts both his English speaking and comedy chops to the test, so comedy fans would do well to get their tickets sooner rather than later. New Yorkers looking to see Elmaleh in a more intimate setting can catch him performing his Oh My Gad set at Joe’s Pub now through June 15. Tickets are $25.
