Chelsea Handler Leaving Talk Show Behind, Embarking on Doc Project

Wednesday Chelsea Handler announced that “Chelsea” is kaput. She’s calling it quits on her innovative Netflix “late night” talk show after two seasons and instead, is pursuing a documentary project with the streaming giant.

Handler shocked her audience in 2014 when she announced she was leaving “Chelsea Lately” after a 7 year run on E! and joining Netflix to create a late night talk show that could be watched anytime. Although the series was praised by many as funny, brash and acerbic, Chelsea was beleaguered with problems early on, with Handler’s audience having difficulty adjusting to the format change.

Her announcement on her social media stressed that she was not leaving Netflix- she was just refocusing her time and energy to a project more in keeping with her current political concerns and a desire to support women’s causes. Motivated by a desire to raise her voice against the Trump Administration (she doesn’t mention Trump by name, but her intent is clear) she says she wants to travel the country, speak at colleges, and listen to students to “gain a better understanding of our political divide.” Her new documentary project will focus on meeting people of different ethnicities, religions and political philosophies. She also plans to give attention to women’s rights and to causes helping elect more women into office.

In the meantime, new episodes of Chelsea will continue to stream through the end of 2017.
