First Official Trailer for Demetri Martin’s New Movie ‘Dean’

Last year, comedian Demetri Martin’s debut film outing, Dean, made big waves at the Tribeca Film Festival. The dramedy had so much buzz surrounding it that companies were apparently chomping at the bit to scoop up rights to the film, with CBS Films eventually securing the deal right there on the floor of the festival. Now, the first trailer for the film has been released.

Dean stars Martin, Kevin Kline (Bob’s Burgers, A Fish Called Wanda), Gillian Jacobs (Love, Community), Mary Steenburgen (Step Brothers, The Last Man on Earth), and Reid Scott (Veep). Martin plays the titular character, an illustrator from New York who moves to Los Angeles in the wake of his mother’s death. He and his father (Kline) both struggle to adjust to life after her passing in their own unique ways, and in the process find new love interests (Jacobs, Steenburgen) that help them re-evaluate their paths.

Here’s what the Tribeca Film Festival jury had to say after granting the film the Best Narrative Feature award: “It manages the near impossible task of breathing new life into a well-worn genre, balancing humor and pathos with an incredibly deft touch, and offering a unique perspective on the way we process loss.”

The film appears to be a touching, sometimes-irreverent look at love and loss, with Martin’s signature style sprinkled in throughout. Based on the reviews the film’s received thus far, it looks like this one could be a hit once it makes its wide debut.
