Corden’s Carpool Karaoke to Become a Free Apple Series

carpool karaoke

After just having netted a little over thirty two million views with Michelle Obama guest starring on James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke”, the hit Late Late Show segment has been picked up by Apple Music as its own series. No host has been announced, but the viral segment will join Apple Music’s self-proclaimed brand of content “complementary to the things we’re doing at Apple Music… We’re not trying to compete with Netflix” (Cue, The Hollywood Reporter).

Whether this vague statement refers to a by-subscription platform that more closely resembles an old-school MTV, an exclusive Vevo operated by an umbrella company or what is unclear. The news only preceded the announcement from Spike of ordering a series debuting in 2017 called Caraoke Showdown produced by Craig Robinson by a few hours.

This sale shares similarities with ABC’s straight-to-series purchase of a game show with Jimmy Kimmel at the helm called Who Knows?, based off a segment of the same name. Neither premise resembles a traditional sketch segment but is being classified as one by sources like the Hollywood Reporter. It makes sense that both segments would be beefed up into full-on series considering the low production value of game shows and in-car karaoke, which might just become its own genre very soon.
