The new ad-free self-appointed artisanal comedy site Seeso is rewarding its paid subscribers with seven new series and a documentary premiering this summer including a doc about funny women playing basketball, a scripted series about a lesbian couple making it in the alt comedy scene, some stand up, and a show about lobsters.

While original to the channel, the shows are generally pre-established in some sense, whether as live shows in New York or Los Angeles, award-winning web series, or slightly foreign shows in their second season. The lineup is a diverse mix of scripted and unscripted narratives and one stand-up show with relatively low episode counts. This is fitting with the reputation Seeso has eagerly proliferated for itself as a twenty first century United Artists, a creator-driven company prioritizing quality over quantity.

Series debut every two weeks with all episodes available upon premiere date. Both of Junes’ series are direct versions of pre-popularized shows, one online and the other a live show. Gentleman Lobsters is an animated television adaptation of a Webby Award Winning GQ digital series of the same name about the problems and prejudice faced by two twenty-something lobsters.  June 30th will herald in Night Train with Wyatt Cenac, where the former “Daily Show” writer hosts his popular, unpredictable live show that mixes stand up, music and more.

Ever wished you could see funny women playing basketball?  Good news. Seeso has obtained global rights to the documentary The Pistol Shrimps, also premiering June 16th. The feature centers on a wildly popular and moderately successful female LA basketball team comprised of actresses, comedians and models. The team underwent an odyssey to revitalize women’s basketball in Los Angeles by constructing a larger-than-life persona to fake a Burger King endorsement, start a dance squad to perform at their shows, grab attention on ESPN and use their notable member’s fame (teammates include Aubrey Plaza, Stephanie Allynne, Angela Trimbur, Maria Blasucci) while also arranging for previously waitlisted women and members of the UCB community to join other teams and populate the once derelict women’s league with teams. The popularity of their games sparked an Earwolf podcast (Pistol Shrimp Radio) providing live commentary hosted by Matt Gourley and Mark McConville. This feminist conquest will hopefully be captured in the film, which follows their 2015 season.

Comedians fantasy roleplaying is next up.  Mid-July (the 14th to be specific) will bring back more Dan Harmon with his latest project Harmonquest with Dungeon Master and co-star of “Great Minds” Spencer Crittenden, Erin McGathy and Jeff Bryan Davis. “Harmonville” is the brain-spawn of a popular segment from the Sunday night Los Angeles show “Harmontown” at the Nerdmelt Showroom. The live show featured assorted comedians fantasy roleplaying, but Seeso’s version has been hinted at having live-action accompaniments to the fantastical narrations. This could look a little something like Comedy Central’s hit show, “Drunk History.”

The Canadian comedy The Amazing Gayl Pile will air its second and third seasons simultaneously on July 28th. The show is helmed by Brooks Gray and Morgan Waters. “Gayl Pile” centers on a man’s hopeless forays into the world of home shopping. The summer rounds out with Rhea Butcher and Carmen Esposito’s highly anticipated semi-autobiographical series, Take My Wife. The single camera comedy centers on a young lesbian couples capers in the underground comedy scene, particularly as their relationship affects the show they host.

Seeso’s line-up includes a travel show, hosted by Jonah Ray (who co-hosts of Comedy Central’s “Meltdown” with Kumail Nanjiani).  Titled, Hidden America with Jonah Ray,  the latest series about funny people checking out America airs June 2,  and Thingstarter, a modern workplace comedy starts next week on May 19.

Besides minimizing risks with pre-established shows and familiar names, Seeso has also latched on to monolith Amazon Prime starting May 5th. Seeso subscriptions will be included in the cost of an Amazon Prime membership and audiences can access Seeso’s content from all Amazon platforms. Hopefully a measure of success down the line will boost Seeso from a fledgling company to an established platform elevating lesser known talents.
